About Manhasset, NY
Manhasset was once a prime destination for fishing and farming, so many people have gravitated to the area and settled here over the centuries including native Americans, the Dutch, and the English.
The area was originally named Little Cow Neck in the 17th century for its excellent grazing land where people would raise herds of cattle. In 1840, the area was renamed Manhasset, which is a native American word for ‘island neighborhood’.
One of the reasons Manhasset real estate is so highly sought after is because it’s an easy commute to Manhattan. Manhasset is on the Port Washington Line of the Long Island Rail Road. The train makes one stop in Great Neck before arriving at Penn Station. The trip takes about 30 minutes in total.
You can also make the commute by car via either the Long Island Expressway or the Grand Central Parkway. Depending on traffic, the drive could take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Manhasset is also an easy drive to other communities in Long Island including Hicksville, Garden City, and Valley Stream.
